Whitney Houston, Best Coast and Other Stuff...

Heard an array of new stuff in the last week or two, some being good, some just plain irritating but also some that define mediocracy.

One thing is for sure, If I hear another Whitney Houston song, I'm going to implode. Sure, she was amazing but there's something irritating about celebrating a deceased person's work so heavily, and quite frankly, cashing in on it. I heard itunes UK raised the price of her best of collection by £3 over night following the news of her death. A beautiful sentiment itunes, well done....

Band of Skulls' new album ( I haven't heard their debut) is probably the most average thing I've heard in a while. If 6/10 is average, then thats exactly what it is. A classic 'singles' album, with the singles being positive, but the rest of the album proving to be a let down. A Shame...

Finally listened to Best Coast's 'Crazy for you' this week. Described as 'surf pop', it couldn't really be more spot on. It's soothing, relaxed feel is very prominent in it's beach-like feel. It's short and snappy style is quite rare but does throw up the odd song sounding almost identical to the last. I still like it though, even if it isn't something I would listen to regularly.

Brit Awards 2012 tommorow and it seems as every year goes by, they mean less and less. I'm sure the very unbiased NME awards and the perfectly judged Q awards shall readdress the balance... Or not.... No Q, two door cinema club aren't the best band on the planet.

Finally, Gotye... Fuck off.

New Music

Everyone has a band or a collection of bands they first love when the get into music and rock music in particular... It tends to be the popular bands of the time and what is widely considered "cool". For example, Arctic Monkeys and The Killers were two of the coolest bands around when I first got into music of this genre.

For years they get played, over and over and over, still regarding them as one of your favourites despite new bands coming and going and discovering old bands. Around a year ago however, I got very bored indeed. I've found the bands you've loved for years start to fade away slightly. Take Muse. At one point I was near on obsessed but these days If I were to put on 'Black holes and revelations', It wouldn't have the same kick as it perhaps once gave...

For me, discovering new music is far more rewarding now. Also, some bands never get boring. I can't see myself getting bored to Radiohead or the first two Strokes albums for example. These are the bands you should consider your favourites. Like anything, if it stands the test of time (albeit a few years) it must strike a chord (puntastic).

I guess I have found out that if you actively search for new music, you will find good stuff. Not only that but you're music taste may even branch out... Having the time to try an album you haven't heard but you could potentially like or even dislike, is better than playing the same old stuff on repeat. We all have favourites, but discovering something new that you love is a better way of going about things.

With this in mind I recommend:

War on Drugs - Slave Ambient
Kurt Vile - Smoke Ring for my Halo
Horrors - Primary Colours

I am aware these albums aren't particularly new, but newly discovered!

p.s I will not say 'puntastic' ever again.

Pulled apart by horses...

Are pulled apart by horses worse than Hadouken? I didn't think it was possible for a group of "musicians" to stoop that low; but I was most certainly wrong...

What an abundance of incompetent, nauseating shite.

Black Keys with Band of Skulls support.

Black Keys!

Seeing the Black keys on thursday with my girlfriend. Should be a good gig! Support from Band of Skulls. Haven't heard anything of theirs but I've heard they are a poor man's white stripes... That will not go down well!

Talking of White Stripes... (well kind of..) Jack White has a solo album out in April. Should be interesting...Not sure how he will cope without Meg White playing the 'kick pedal and snare'. Thats all she did really wasn't it? Weirdly attractive though... Don't ask...

WU LYF, Ian Curtis & 'MyJam'

Biggest love for a new band for as long as I can remember comes from Manchester band 'Wu Lyf'. I was heavily sceptical at first; not particularly liking the vocals despite having the music to back them up. However, in the same way Ian Brown's voice works for the Stone Roses despite having no more singing ability than my own dog; it works for Ellery Roberts also. I cannot remember an album as consistently brilliant as this. A debut too...

After borrowing the 'Joy Division' documentary off a friend, it made me think how sad and tragic Ian Curtis' death was. He was just a normal guy before he discovered his epilepsy, doing what he craved and what he loved. His life pretty much collapsed around him. Everything he gained from music was something he wasn't supposed to do because of his illness. The drink, the flashing lights on stage, the late nights... It drove him insane. It's very sad. It could happen to anyone... If anyone I know ever writes an album as harrowing as 'Closer', I will get them checked out and not assume the lyrics are simply literature or poetry!

Finally, I have discovered a new website called: This is my Jam, which allows users to chose and update their favourite current song to share with their friends. A good way of sharing music easily I think. The website is pretty simple to use and it's free of course! It's invite only currently, but if anyone is interested you can join up if you are friends with me on facebook.

Welcome...

Hello! Welcome. This is my first post on what is infact my first ever blog of any description. As you may have gathered from the title, I will be sharing views and opinions on music I have heard recently as well as older music I have discovered, whether it is new or an old favourite. For those of you who don't know me (probably no one! I can't imagine anyone ever will read this without knowing me personally...) I am 19 years old. I work in HMV currently with other aspirations for my future.

Music has been a big part of my life for around 4 or 5 years, when I discovered "proper music" so to speak. Why the blog?! Well, I enjoy discussing music and I like to share with others what songs/albums/artists I have been enjoying lately.

I have facebook: www.facebook.com/Curt6
